We are holistic beings. That means each of us has a mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual dimension of health. These dimensions work as a system that generally dictates the state of our well-being. When this system is compromised, the body communicates that through a symptom, which serves as a message. A symptom signals an internal imbalance within the body and is often utilized to protect its environment. This process of communication is truly amazing and it confirms that God knew exactly what He was doing when He created us. Rather than feeling frustrated by the symptoms your body may exhibit occasionally, or consistently, it is important to be grateful. Your body is functioning as it was designed to do.

The problem we have in this day and age is that many people focus on managing their symptoms rather than addressing the underlying causes. This approach to symptom suppression is driven by various factors in our fast-paced society and taking the time to permanently eliminate a symptom can be challenging. Sometimes it may seem like the only option is to apply a temporary solution in order to move forward in life. Additionally, societal influences such as diet trends, pharmaceuticals, and bioengineered food often encourage a one-size-fits-all approach to wellness, which is just another form of symptom masking through their quick fix methodologies. Regardless of the reason, it is clear that if a symptom persists, it may eventually lead to the development of an ailment or disease.

In functional wellness, a holistic approach is used to identify and address the underlying cause of a symptom to eradicate the problem instead of just alleviating it. The objective is to ward off the formation of ailments or diseases altogether. While this approach may appear clear-cut, it is important to be mindful of the complexities involved. We are bio-individual beings that undergo continuous change and the person you are today is not the same as yesterday, or even years ago. Different life stages require unique approaches. For example, stressors that were once manageable in the past may now pose as challenges because the previous coping mechanisms may no longer be effective in the current phase of one's life. Understanding this unique multidimensional system of health can be overwhelming for many and this is where we health coaches play a pivotal role.

Health coaches give invaluable support in navigating the interwoven terrain of health by mentoring, educating, guiding, and standing up for an individual's well-being. With this support one can establish goals in order to make the necessary lifestyle changes to address the root cause of a troublesome symptom. It is worth noting that lifestyle changes play a crucial role in wellness, as 80% of chronic diseases arise from lifestyle factors alone. This underscores the power of effective lifestyle management!
